ドイツ西部などで起きた洪水で、ＡＰ通信は１６日、ドイツとベルギーでの死者が計９０人超となったと報じた。ドイツのメルケル首相は１５日、訪問先の米国で洪水被害について、悲劇的な出来事が起き「衝撃を受けている」と述べた。被災地の人々に思いを寄せているとも訴え、人命救助に全力を挙げると約束した。
ドイツ西部ラインラント・プファルツ州やノルトライン・ウェストファーレン州では集中豪雨で河川が氾濫し、川沿いの町が大きな被害を受けた。メルケル氏は「（普段は）平和な場所が大惨事に見舞われている」と強調し、「これは悲劇だ」と語った。

欧州西部を襲った記録的な豪雨で河川の氾濫により洪水が発生し、１６日時点でドイツ西部などで約１３００人の安否が確認されていない。水位の上昇が続き、一部地域で通信が途絶える中、ドイツとベルギー両国の死者は１２０人を超えた。
